Legislation was introduced by the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General of Canada on June 6, 2017 that proposes amendments to Bill C-51. One of the amendments removes section 176, which covers obstruction of a minister performing a religious ceremony, disturbing an assembly, and disturbing the order of a meeting. While the legislation proposes removing only unconstitutional, redundant, or obsolete portions, there is concern that removing section 176 may undermine religious freedom in Canada and that keeping this section offers explicit protections.
